Time: 1 hour
In the following professional development, there are various things we want you to experience
from a teachers perspective, such as understanding how to effectively teach and facilitate the
lesson plan. On the other hand, we also expect you to work through the lesson plan as if you
were a student, in order to understand what they’ll be learning and how they may feel, going
through the lesson plan.
Teacher’s Experience
Read the anchor text, both of the following two supplemental readings,
How the Indians Got the Horse
or American Indian Horse History
and read through Class Period one (3.2 on lesson plan). After this, consider the following questions:
- How will you implement this in your classroom?
- What challenges might you face?
- How will you ensure every student has a voice?
Journal down answers to these questions, as they may help during a class session.
Student’s Experience
To begin, please work through Worksheet 1, and work through
Worksheet 2. Your
students will be completing both of these worksheets before working in Alice and after the
reading. Consider the following questions:
- What may students be confused about in Worksheet 1/ Worksheet 2?
- Are there any parts in the supplemental readings or the anchor text that may be confusing to students?
- How can you lead students in the direction of Alice and coding through these texts?
- Where can you make connections to conditional statements or code?
Journal down answers to these questions, as they may help during a class session.
Towards the end of the class period, the lesson plan advises you to show the students a
conditional statement in Alice. Open the starter world in Alice to practice how you would
portray this information to the students.
